Hari UNESCO Malaysia 2014: “Our Heritage, World Heritage”

The two-day Hari UNESCO Malaysia 2014 (Malaysia UNESCO Day), with the theme “Our Heritage, World Heritage”, was organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) in collaboration with the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO (MNCU). The event was launched in 2011 as annual event and has become a day to celebrate the leading role of Malaysia in implementing UNESCO’s global mandate. The event attracted a large audience consisting of high level Government officials, Malaysian institutions, ambassadors, UN agencies and the public.

The main objective of this event is to enhance the public’s awareness of the important mandates of UNESCO in education, sciences, culture and communication and information. The Hari UNESCO Malaysia, via its exhibition, also serves to highlight Malaysia’s past and present achievements in every aspect of UNESCO competencies. It is hoped that Hari UNESCO Malaysia will help garner more interest and participation in UNESCO’s programmes. The event’s activities include art and cultural shows, exhibitions on science, technology, education, heritage and culture, UNESCO exhibition and, demonstration and interactivity of culture. 

The Rt. Hon. Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Muhyiddin Haji Mohd Yassin, the Deputy Prime Minister cum Education Minister of Malaysia and also the President of Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO (MNCU) who officiated the event said that Malaysia has always been and will continue to be inspired by the mission and commitment of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to ensure sustainable development, eradicate poverty, and promote inter-cultural dialogue and peace. 

At the event, Prof. Dr. Hubert Gijzen, Regional Director of UNESCO Jakarta Office handed over to the Deputy Prime Minister the certificate of inscription, cognising the Crocker Range in Sabah as a World Biosphere Reserve under the 'Man and the Biosphere' programme of UNESCO.
