INDONESIA: Short Course on Science and Technology Diplomacy: Elevating Science, Research and Innovation for Global Collaboration 2026

ISTIC, in collaboration with Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), organised the Short Course on Science and Technology Diplomacy: Elevating Science, Research and Innovation for Global Collaboration, held from 21 to 23 September 2026 at BRIN, Jakarta.
The three-day training brought together 75 Indonesian participants, including mid-career scientists, research managers and policy officials from key ministries, government agencies and universities. Co-developed and delivered by BRIN and ISTIC, the programme combined their respective expertise and perspectives to strengthen participants’ understanding of science diplomacy and develop practical skills for engaging at the intersection of science, policy and international relations. The collaboration also reflects ISTIC’s broader mandate to strengthen capacity in science, technology and innovation across the Global South.
The programme covered the foundations and global landscape of science diplomacy, emerging technologies, Global South perspectives, science communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement and partnership building. Interactive exercises, simulations and group work were incorporated throughout the training to facilitate practical learning, knowledge exchange and peer engagement.
The programme further strengthened the longstanding collaboration between ISTIC and BRIN in advancing South-South cooperation. Drawing on the complementary expertise of both institutions, the training provided Indonesian scientists, researchers and policymakers with practical perspectives on applying science diplomacy to strengthen international scientific cooperation, partnerships and engagement.
