INDONESIA : International Training Programme on : “STI Policy: Artificial Intelligence for Climate Learning Futures”

The International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre (ISTIC) under the auspices of UNESCO, in collaboration with the Centre for Science & Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Centre) and Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), successfully convened the International Training Programme on : “STI Policy: Artificial Intelligence for Climate Learning Futures” from 22 to 25 September 2025 in Malang, Indonesia.
Objectives
The training aimed to provide a comprehensive platform for exchanging national strategies and best practices, while building the capacity of educators and policymakers to implement AI-driven, inclusive learning approaches. Participants engaged in rich discussions and collaborative activities that addressed infrastructure needs, teacher training, ethical governance, and policy alignment, all with the goal of integrating AI effectively into climate education. Over the course of the programme, participants co-created policy briefs and actionable recommendations designed to support national STI strategies while fostering inclusive, forward-looking educational approaches.
The programme brought together 25 participants from 13 nationalities, including policymakers, educators, researchers, and AI and ICT specialists, with the shared goal of strengthening climate literacy and exploring the transformative potential of AI in education, particularly in the Global South.



The programme featured a distinguished lineup of trainers, including :
- Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aini Suzana Ariffin, an expert in educational policy and AI applications;
- Prof. Dr. Kiran Bhujun, specializing in AI integration for small island developing states;
- Prof. Dr. Aji Prasetya Wibawa, focused on AI tools for policy innovation and education;
- Prof. Dr. Hadi Suwono, an authority in climate pedagogy and citizen science;
- Dr. Norshaliza Kamaruddin, who moderated discussions on inclusive, multi-stakeholder approaches.
High-level contributions from Prof. Ahmad Najib Burhani (Indonesia) and Dr. Balamurugan A/L Nallamuthu (Malaysia) highlighted national strategies for leveraging AI to foster climate-resilient and transformative education.
Programme Highlights
Throughout the programme, participants explored the mapping of existing initiatives, identification of policy gaps, hands-on practice with AI tools, and the design of inclusive pedagogy and citizen science models. Interactive workshops and innovation labs enabled participants to draft policy frameworks and develop implementation plans while fostering collaboration among stakeholders from across the Global South.
The programme concluded with presentations of co-created policy briefs, collective reflections on key insights, and an educational and cultural excursion at Universitas Negeri Malang and in Malang city, offering both professional enrichment and intercultural exchange.
