The International Science,\u00a0Technology\u00a0and Innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation (ISTIC), in collaboration with the\u00a0National Research Foundation<\/a>\u00a0(NRF)\u00a0South Africa\u00a0successfully\u00a0convened\u00a0the \u201cAFRASIA\u00a0Programme\u00a0Validation and Stakeholder Strategic Engagement Workshop\u201d from 6 to 8 May 2026 at\u00a0Universitas Negeri Malang<\/a>\u00a0in Indonesia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>
The workshop brought together representatives from\u00a0key\u00a0partner\u00a0institutions, including the\u00a0Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MOHEST) of Indonesia<\/a>,\u00a0Future Earth Africa Hub Leadership Centre (FEAHLC)<\/a>,\u00a0Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM)<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Malaysia Science Endowment (MSE)<\/a>, the\u00a0University of Technology Malaysia (UTM), <\/a>Univeristas Negeri Malang<\/a>, University of Pretoria<\/a> and the Tanzania\u00a0Commission for\u00a0Science and\u00a0Technology<\/a>\u00a0(COSTECH)\u00a0to\u00a0finalize\u00a0the AFRASIA\u00a0programme\u00a0framework ahead of its official launch.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A structured initiative for Asia-Africa Cooperation<\/strong><\/h4>

The Asia\u2013Africa South\u2013South Collaborative Research\u00a0Programme\u00a0(AFRASIA)<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>is a multi-country initiative aimed at strengthening collaboration in\u00a0<\/span>science, technology, and innovation<\/span><\/b>\u00a0across Asia and Africa, supported by founding institutions from<\/span>\u00a0South Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Tanzania.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>The\u00a0programme\u00a0addresses shared development challenges, particularly in\u00a0<\/span>water security, renewable energy<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and just transition, and\u00a0Planetary health.\u00a0These areas continue to face limitations due to fragmented research efforts, uneven institutional capacity, and insufficient translation of scientific knowledge into policy and practice.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Developed through consultations and institutional engagements since 2022, the\u00a0programme\u00a0has progressively defined its\u00a0<\/span>vision, governance, funding model, and implementation approach<\/span><\/b>. The\u00a03-days\u00a0workshop marked\u00a0an\u00a0important\u00a0stage of this process by\u00a0validating\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>programme\u2019s\u00a0framework\u00a0<\/span><\/b>ahead of its launch.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

A decisive step towards implementation <\/strong><\/h4>

Structured in a deliberate and strategic manner, the workshop dedicated its first two days to\u00a0<\/span>programme\u00a0validation<\/span><\/b>, ensuring that all technical and institutional elements were thoroughly reviewed and agreed upon before moving to broader stakeholder engagement.\u00a0Sessions focused on\u00a0<\/span>strategic framing<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>programme\u00a0architecture<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>work packages<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>governance, co-funding and institutional alignment,\u00a0implementation\u00a0readiness\u00a0and endorsement, as well as technical synthesis and refinement.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>This sequencing helped\u00a0maintain\u00a0a clear focus on confirmation and refinement without reopening fundamental design components.\u00a0By\u00a0establishing\u00a0a formally endorsed baseline, participants were able to approach stakeholder engagement from a position of clarity, alignment, and readiness.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span>The final day shifted towards\u00a0<\/span>operationalisation<\/span><\/b>, with discussions centered on how AFRASIA will be positioned<\/span>\u00a0within national systems and industry ecosystems.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0This included\u00a0identifying\u00a0entry points for researchers, strengthening collaboration pathways, and enhancing linkages that will support effective\u00a0programme\u00a0implementation.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
