From<\/span> <\/span>July 1<\/span>4<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> to <\/span>23<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span>, <\/span>The International Science, <\/span>Technology<\/span> and Innovation Center <\/span>under<\/span> the auspices of <\/span>UNESCO<\/span> (<\/span>ISTIC<\/span>)<\/span> coordinated<\/span> the South <\/span>African<\/span> delegation<\/span> regional<\/span> mission <\/span>across<\/span> <\/span>Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, and Malang <\/span><\/span>engaging<\/span> with<\/span> leading<\/span> institutions and experts to <\/span>strengthen<\/span> <\/span>South-South <\/span>cooperation<\/span><\/span> and <\/span>foster<\/span> meaningful<\/span> partnerships in <\/span><\/span>Science, <\/span>Technology<\/span> & Innovation (STI)<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This event was organized in collaboration with the <\/span>National Research Foundation (NRF)<\/span><\/b><\/a> of South Africa<\/span><\/b>, the <\/span>Future Earth Africa Hub<\/span><\/b><\/a>, and its <\/span>Leadership Centre (FEAHLC)<\/span><\/b><\/a> as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation through the development of bilateral frameworks, joint research initiatives, and institutional partnerships.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The first part of the visit took place in Malaysia, from July <\/span>14th to 18th.<\/span><\/b> During this week,\u00a0 the South African delegation had the opportunity to engage with four national institutions in Malaysia, in preparation for an upcoming technical workshop. They visited the <\/span>Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology & Innovation (MRANTI)<\/span><\/b><\/a>, the <\/span>Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM)<\/span><\/b><\/a>, the <\/span>National Water Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM)<\/span><\/b><\/a>, and the <\/span>National Institute of Health (NIH)<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Following these visits, a two-day <\/span>Malaysia\u2013South Africa Consultative Workshop on Enhancing South\u2013South Cooperation in STI for Sustainable Development<\/span><\/b> was held at the Pullman Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. The event brought together <\/span>45 participants and 11 speakers<\/span><\/b> including <\/span>researchers, academics, and policy makers<\/span><\/b> who took part in panel discussions and roundtables focused on key challenges in the <\/span>health<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>energy<\/span><\/b>, and <\/span>water<\/span><\/b> sectors across countries of the Global South.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This workshop was a significant milestone, marking the signing of a <\/span>Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)<\/span><\/b> between <\/span>NRF<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>ISTIC, <\/span><\/b>the outcome of two years of dialogue on strengthening STI collaboration between Malaysia and South Africa. <\/span>The MoU was signed by <\/span>Dr Nare Prudence Makhura<\/span><\/b>, Executive Director: International Grants and Partnerships at NRF, on behalf of <\/span>Dr Gugu Moche,<\/span><\/b> the organisation\u2019s Group Executive: Digital Transformation and Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer, and <\/span>Professor Dr Mohd Basyaruddin Abd Rahman<\/span><\/b>, Chair of ISTIC Governing Board.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The week ended by the organization of the <\/span>3rd South Africa-Malaysia Joint <\/span>Committee Meeting held by the <\/span>Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

From <\/span>July 19th to 22nd<\/span><\/b>, the delegation continued its mission in <\/span>Indonesia<\/span><\/b>, visiting the cities of <\/span>Malang<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>Jakarta<\/span><\/b>. During this segment of the visit, three institutional meetings were held with <\/span>Universitas Negeri Malang<\/span><\/b>,<\/span> the <\/span>National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN)<\/span><\/b><\/a>, and the <\/span>Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MOHEST)<\/span><\/b> of Indonesia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This mission strengthened both <\/span>bilateral and multilateral relationships and<\/span><\/b> demonstrated the growing importance of <\/span>South\u2013South cooperation<\/span><\/b> in advancing shared goals in science, innovation, and policy. Notably, the two-week programme laid the groundwork for a new Asia\u2013Africa regional collaboration project in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), set to be launched later in 2025.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
