Dato' Ir. Lee Yee Cheong Hon. Chairman of ISTIC Governing Board was invited by UNESCO Regional Science Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, Jakarta to speak at the 1st Malaysia UNESCO Expert Synthesis Meeting in Langkawi 14-16 May 2019. The meeting was jointly officiated by Shahbaz Khan, Director UNESCO Jakarta and Mohammad Sanusi Abdul Karim, Secretary General, Malaysia National Commission for UNESCO. The meeting commemorated the 10th Anniversary of Malaysia UNESCO Cooperation Program (MUCP) and signaled the end of MUCP. This Langkawi meeting will compile the valuable experience of MUCP in empowering South-South Cooperation.

Speaking at MUCP Seminar Langkawi May 2019

Dato Ir. Lee in his presentation highlighted the only MUCP program that ISTIC was actively engaged in, namely the Standardisation of Engineering Education Qualifications to Acceptable International Standards for South Countries under the ISTIC/UNESCO AP/FEIAP ( Federation of Engineering Institutions in Asia and the Pacific) Agenda that had under MUCP funding extended the Program to Central Asia and Africa. Dato Lee mentioned that the funding of the Program will be undertaken by China under the Belt and Road Initiative. He made a strong plea for MUCP to continue and to support the Program with token funding so that South countries who will benefit from the Program will remember Malaysia’s generosity.

The plea to continue MUCP was echoed by all delegates Malaysian and Non-Malaysian alike who all felt that the first decade of MUCP had benefitted all partners including UNESCO and Malaysia. It has been a significant demonstration of Malaysia’s soft power in “PROSPER THY NEIGHBOURS”.
