Training Workshop on Computer Science Education

Training Workshop on Computer Science Education
23-27 October 2017 | Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The abovesaid training workshop was successfully held from 23-27 October 2017 at Corus Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The training workshop was officiated by Dr. Rusmini Ku Ahmad, Deputy Rector, Institute of Teacher Education Malaysia representing the Director General of Education, Malaysia. The welcome remark was made by Dato’ Dr. Sharifah Maimunah Syed Zin, Director of ISTIC. During the opening, the Honorary Chairman of ISTIC, Dato’ Ir. (Dr.) Lee Yee Cheong gave a brief presentation and introduced the report “Digital Skills for Life and Work” which is published by UN Broadband Commission. Dr. David Wilgenbus, the facilitator and representative of LAMAP Foundation presented an overview of the training workshop. This is the first training workshop on computer science education involving robotic components.

25 participants which consisted delegates from 7 countries comprising Cambodia, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Namibia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Malaysia attended the workshop, 14 were males and 11 were females. Participants was comprised teacher trainers, curriculum developers, educational technologists responsible for computer education and developers of related resource materials and all of them equipped with computer skills.

The main objective of the training workshop was to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to participants on computer science through ‘unplugged’ and ‘plugged' activities and apply these into pedagogical activities and implement “coding in classroom” in primary and secondary school. The unplugged activities used a lot of method such as pencil game, card game etc as a metaphors to computer science theory in order to create fun learning and easy understanding. The basic software used is “Scratch” which can be used by children as young as in kindergarten and which can be downloaded for free. The coding session comprised the lessons on scratch coding, robotics (Thymio, Mbot and Arduino) and also Makey Makey (tools which allows users to connect everyday objects to computer programs).

At the end of workshop, participants were expected to have gained the necessary knowledge and hands-on experience on ‘unplugged’ and ‘plugged’ activities in computer science using IBSE approach. The sessions delivered included programming using different environments (Scratch, Visual Programming Languages (VPL), Blockly) and the participants also discovered turnkey pedagogical resources and which would enable to develop their own pedagogical projects / activities on computer science.
