ISTIC Information Session to G77 Ambassadors to UNESCO
His Excellency Datuk Kenneth Luis, Malaysian Ambassador to UNESCO hosted the first information session for G77 ambassadors on the progress of ISTIC at 9.30am Monday 9 November 2009 in UNESCO Paris. About 35 Ambassadors or their representatives were present. Academician Dato Ir. Lee Yee Cheong FASc made the progress report which was very well received. More background information on ISTIC were also handed out in ISTIC folders. There was a lively discussion with many valuable suggestions from Their Excellencies. ISTIC has taken due notice.

ISTIC at World Science Forum (WSF)
Tan Sri Omar Abdul Rahman, Head of ISTIC STI Policy Consultative Unit, was invited to speak on Science Advice during the G77 Ministers of S&T Forum 4 November 2009. About 30 Ministers or their representatives were report. The Forum launched the Consortium of Science Technology and Innovation for the South (COSTIS).

Academician Dato Ir. Lee Yee Cheong FASc chaired the UNESCO/ISESCO Session in WSF on “Science for Policy to address Global Challenges” Highlighting the work of the InterAcademy Panel (IAP) and InterAcademy Council (IAC). He also made a presentation on the IAC Energy Study Report “Lighting the Way; Towards a Sustainable Energy Future”.

ISTIC Dialogue with European Institute of Technology and Innovation (E.I.T)
ISTIC Governing Board Chairman Academician Dato Ir. Lee Yee Cheong FASc, Executive Committee member Datuk Ir. Dr. Ahmad Zaidee Laidin FASc, Director Dato’ Dr. Samsudin Tugiman FASc and Senior Manager Mr. Nasarudin Rahman met with E.I.T Chairman Professor Martin Schuurmans and Board members Professor Daria Tataj and Professor Yrjo Neovo in Hilton Hotel Budapest on 5 November 2009. E.I.T was established by the European Commission in 2008 to promote innovation in the E.U. E.I.T’s mission is “To be the catalyst for a step change in the European Community’s innovation capacity and impact.” The Dialogue discovered much common ground between E.I.T and ISTIC. ISTIC signed historic MOU with Islamic Educational Scientific Cultural Organization (ISESCO)
Chairman of ISTIC Governing Board Academician Dato Ir. Lee Yee Cheong FASc signed a historic M.O.U. with ISESCO Director General, His Excellency Dr. Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri on 4th November 2009 on the occasion of the ISTIC Governing Board meeting in Budapest during the World Science Forum. His Excellency is a member of ISTIC Governing Board.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by UNESCO Assistant Director General for Natural Sciences, Professor Dr. Walter Erdelen, UNESCO Director for Science Policy and Sustainable Development, Dr. Mustafa El Tayeb, His Excellency Dr. Maged El Sherbiny, Assistant Minister of Education and Scientific Research, Egypt, Dr. Moneef Joubi, Secretary General, Islamic World Academy of Sciences, Dr. Faiq Billal, ISESCO Director (Science) and other ISESCO Senior Executives, Datuk Ir. Dr. Ahmad Zaidee Laidin FASc, Vice President, Academy of Sciences Malaysia and ISTIC Executive Committee member, Dato Dr. Samsudin Tugiman FASc, ISTIC Director and Mr. Nasarudin Abd. Rahman, ISTIC Senior Manager.
In his opening address, HE ISESCO Director General emphasized the importance of the partnership between UNESCO and ISESCO in the promotion of education, science and culture in ISESCO member countries. This MOU with ISTIC will strengthen further the collaboration between ISESCO and UNESCO in science technology and innovation in ISESCO member countries. He pledged ISESCO’s support for ISTIC’s programme as a partner.
In his response, Dato’ Lee thanked ISESCO Director General and ISESCO for the generous support to enable delegates from ISESCO member countries to participate in ISTIC launch in Kuala Lumpur in May 2008 and ISTIC’s first activity “National S&T Policy-the Importance of Industry Needs” in Kuala Lumpur June 2009. He looked forward to a fruitful partnership between ISESCO and ISTIC in South-South cooperation in STI not only amongst ISESCO member countries but also in the wider context of G77 and the whole developing world.
Dato’ Lee took the opportunity of the signing ceremony to present a gift to Dr Mustafa El Tayeb for his great effort in the establishment of ISTIC. On behalf of ISTIC, he wished Dr Mustafa happy retirement from UNESCO. |

The launch meeting of the Centre is to formally establish Governing Board. In its first session the Governing Board shall: adopt the Centre Constitution, elect the Executive Committee, appoint the Scientific Council member, appoint Executive Director, and approve programme and budget of the Centre for 2008-2010.
