ISTIC Governing Board Meeting

The 2009 ISTIC Governing Board meeting was held in Budapest on 4 November 2009. The meeting was chaired by Academician Dato Ir. Lee Yee Cheong FASc. Governing Board members present were;
- Professor Dr. Walter Erdelen, UNESCO ADG for Natural Sciences
- H.E. Dr. Abdulaziz Othman Alwaijiri, ISESCO Director General represented by Dr. Faiq Bilal
- H.E. Hany Helal, Minister of Higher Education & Scientifc Research, Egypt represented by H.E. Dr. El Sherbiny
- Dr. Ousmane Kane, Former Executive Director, African Regional Centre for Technology
- Prof. Harold Ramkisson, Chair CARICOM Steering Committee on S&T, Trinidad West Indies
- Prof. Crispus Kiamba, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education Science & Technology, Kenya
- Prof. Nuket Yetis, Vice President, the Scientific and Technological Research Council (TUBITAK) Turkey represented by Prof. Omer Ziya Cebeci
- Prof. Mohamad Hassan, Executive Director, Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS)

ISTIC Dialogue with European Institute of Technology and Innovation (E.I.T)

ISTIC Governing Board Chairman Academician Dato Ir. Lee Yee Cheong FASc, Executive Committee member Datuk Ir. Dr. Ahmad Zaidee Laidin FASc, Director Dato’ Dr. Samsudin Tugiman FASc and Senior Manager Mr. Nasarudin Rahman  met with E.I.T Chairman Professor Martin Schuurmans and Board members Professor Daria Tataj and Professor Yrjo Neovo in Hilton Hotel Budapest on 5 November 2009. E.I.T was established by the European Commission in 2008 to promote innovation in the E.U. E.I.T’s mission is “To be the catalyst for a step change in the European Community’s innovation capacity and impact.” The Dialogue discovered much common ground between E.I.T and ISTIC. ISTIC at World Science Forum (WSF)

Tan Sri Omar Abdul Rahman, Head of ISTIC STI Policy Consultative Unit, was invited to speak on Science Advice during the G77 Ministers of S&T Forum 4 November 2009. About 30 Ministers or their representatives were report. The Forum launched the Consortium of Science Technology and Innovation for the South (COSTIS).

Academician Dato Ir. Lee Yee Cheong FASc chaired the UNESCO/ISESCO Session in WSF on “Science for Policy to address Global Challenges” Highlighting the work of the InterAcademy Panel (IAP) and InterAcademy Council (IAC). He also made a presentation on the IAC Energy Study Report “Lighting the Way; Towards a Sustainable Energy Future”.

ISTIC Information Session to G77 Ambassadors to UNESCO

His Excellency Datuk Kenneth Luis, Malaysian Ambassador to UNESCO hosted the first information session for G77 ambassadors on the progress of ISTIC at 9.30am Monday 9 November 2009 in UNESCO Paris. About 35 Ambassadors or their representatives were present. Academician Dato Ir. Lee Yee Cheong FASc made the progress report which was very well received. More background information on ISTIC were also handed out in ISTIC folders. There was a lively discussion with many valuable suggestions from Their Excellencies. ISTIC has taken due notice.

  • Research and Development Management Programme for High Level Policy Makers, November, 2009, Seoul, South Korea
  • Forum on South-South Cooperation in STI to be held in conjunction with UNESCO/ICSU World Science Forum, 5-7 November, 2009, Budapest, Hungary
  • Forum on South-South Cooperation in STI to be held in conjunction with International Engineering Congress & Exhibition on Technology, Innovation & Production for Sustainable Development, 18-20 October, 2010, Buenos Aires, Argentina

The ISTIC program for 2009-2010 will cover the areas of S&T policy, energy, natural disaster mitigation and STI human capacity building within the framework of UNESCO program for natural sciences.

ISTIC Launch Meeting

The launch meeting of the Centre is to formally establish Governing Board. In its first session the Governing Board shall: adopt the Centre Constitution, elect the Executive Committee, appoint the Scientific Council member, appoint Executive Director, and approve programme and budget of the Centre for 2008-2010.
