Training Workshop on Innovative Teaching & Learning of Science through Inquiry-Based Science Education (IBSE) for Teacher Trainers from Asia - Pacific Region

The Training Workshop on Innovative Teaching & Learning of Science through Inquiry-Based Science Education (IBSE) for Teacher Trainers from Asia-Pacific Region was held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia from 17-22 November 2014. It was organized by the International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre (ISTIC) for South-South Cooperation under the auspices of UNESCO in collaboration with SEAMEO Regional Centre for QITEP in Science (QITEP) in Science, SEAMEO Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics (RECSAM), and La main à la pâte Foundation. This training workshop was attended by 51 participants comprising 40 participants from Indonesia and 11 participants from 4 countries outside Indonesia.

The five-day workshop is targeted to achieve the following objectives:

  • Recognise the importance of inquiry-based science education (IBSE) in teaching science
  • Recognise the philosophy and ten principles of La main à la pâte
  • Experience the process of inquiry-based science teaching and learning
  • Develop an action plan for disseminating and sharing of experiences on La main à la pâte with colleagues and teachers in their respective home countries
  • Define the roles of trainers and resource persons in operationalising La main à la pâte in home countries

The opening session was graced by Prof. Widodo, Director of PPPPTK Matematika representing the Secretary General of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Prof. Dr. Ainun Na’im. At the opening session, Prof. Daniel Rouan, President of La main a la pate Foundation presented the keynote address, Dato’ Dr. Samsudin Tugiman, Director of ISTIC and Dr. Indarjani, Deputy Director of programme of SEAMEO QITEP in Science also gave the welcome address.

Closing of the Training Workshop

The closing session of the training workshop was officiated by the Secretary General, Ministry of Education and Culture, Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Ainum Na’im.

Outcome of the Training Workshop

The outcomes of the training workshop are as follows:

  1. Participants were able to enhance their experience on IBSE based on the philosophy and principles of La main a la pate.
  2. Participants were able to develop and put into practice the teaching of IBSE through Micro teaching projects and hands experience in doing the projects.
  3. Concrete follow up action on IBSE using the philosophy and principles of La main a la pate will be followed up in Indonesia and Malaysia.
  4. For 15 participants who are participating in this programme for the second time have reported successful follow-up action in their countries.
  5. Fiji is keen to host a training workshop on IBSE for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in 2016.
