KAST-ASM-IAP International Workshop on ‘Science Literacy: Science Communication and Science Outreach’

Dato’ Ir.  Lee Yee Cheong, Chairman of ISTIC Governing Board, Dato’ Dr. Samsudin Tugiman, Director of ISTIC and Dato’ Dr. Sharifah Maimunah Syed Zin participated in the above workshop which was held at Seoul University, Korea. The workshop was jointlyorganized by the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) and the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), and supported by IAP – the global network of science academies, the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA) and the International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre (ISTIC) for South-South Cooperation under the Auspices of UNESCO. The opening was officiated by Prof. Park Sung Hyun, President of the Korean Academy of Sciences (KAST). Dato’ Dr. Samsudin Tugiman gave a welcoming address while Prof. Dr. Volker ter Meulen, (Co-Chair, IAP –the global network of science academies) gave an introductory remark. The conference objective was to discuss and propose better ways to improve science literacy under the themes: to develop effective education and communication of science for scientific literacy and to develop effective communication for SHER (science, health, environment and risk) for public understanding of science and technology. Dato’ Ir. Lee Yee Cheong was a key note speaker and spoke on “Science, Engineering and Technology and the UN sustainable Development Goals 2016-2030” and Dato’ Dr. Sharifah Maimunah presented on “Promoting Science Literacy at School Level”. There were eighteen other speakers both from Korea and various countries, comprising experts on science literacy and science communication for the public.  About 100 participants attended the conference.
