From 19-23 September 2016, 41 selected participants from developing countries comprising 8 international participants from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Kenya, Kiribati, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uganda and 33 participants from Malaysia participated in the above workshop. 

This workshop held at the Quality Hotel City Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was a follow up of the first training workshop in 2015 that was held in Kuala Lumpur which was supported by the Malaysian Institute of Teacher Education (IPGM). This is the 13th training programme on IBSE organised by ISTIC in collaboration with LAMAP Foundation, France.

The workshop was officiated by the Rector of the Malaysian Institute of Teacher Education (IPGM), Dr. Azian Tengku Syed Abdullah while the Chairman of ISTIC Governing Board, Dato’ Dr. Samsudin Tugiman gave the welcome speech. Dr. David Wilgenbus representing LAMAP Foundation also spoke during the opening.

The workshop was designed to enable participants such to:

  • recognize the importance of inquiry-based science education (IBSE) in  teaching science
  • recognize the philosophy and ten principles of La main à la pâte
  • experience the process of inquiry-based science teaching and learning
  • develop an action plan for disseminating and sharing of experiences on La main à la pâte with colleagues and teachers in their respective home countries.

The participants were refreshed with the philosophy of hands-on and the activities to make science education interesting. The workshop comprised lectures, hands-on activities, school visits and sharing of information on their follow up activities in promoting IBSE after the first training through presentations and posters, preparation on how to assert on the teachers.

The workshop also introduced the use of coding and algorithm in computer sciences. Three facilitators conducted the training. They were Dr. David Frederic Wilgenbus and Mr. Henri Plande from La main à la pâte Foundation while Dr. Koay Suan See from SMK Haji Zainul Abidin, Penang, Malaysia was the resource person on IBSE discussions.

The closing remark was made by Dato’ Dr. Sharifah Maimunah Syed Zin, Director of ISTIC while Dato’ Dr. Samsudin Tugiman and Dr. David Wilgenbus presented the Certificates of Attendance to all participants.
