The ITPS 2017 was successfully held from 31 July - 4 August 2017 at Corus Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The training programme was officiated by Associate Prof. Dr. Ramzah Dambul, Deputy Secretary-General (STI) representing Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Azhar Bin Hj. Yahaya, Secretary-General, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Malaysia. The welcome remarks was done by ISTIC Governing Board Chairman, Dato’ Dr. Samsudin Tugiman FASc. and Dr. Ismael Abdelhamid, Expert and Science Directorate, ISESCO representing the Director-General of ISESCO.

 

Visit to National STEM Learning Centre

National STEM Learning Centre, University of York

The three hour visit was made with a view to gain further insights into the functions and activities of the Centre with a special focus on the management of and priority areas of Continuous Professional Development (CPD), teaching / learning resources and quality assurance, and support & monitoring. The general overview of the Centre was made by Ms. Karen Hornby of the International Relations Section while the session on Monitoring and Evaluation was done by Mr. Ben Dunn and his colleague.

The National STEM Learning Centre is an agency that provides continuous professional development (CPD) programmes for science and mathematics teachers as well as technicians involved the teaching of science in schools. The CPDs are mainly targeted at science and mathematics teachers at the secondary school level. The Centre is financially supported by the Wellcome Trust, the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, the government, Partners of Project Enthuse and other sponsors of STEM related activities.

The conference was aimed at showcasing successful innovations in STI by women in solving or minimising problems faced by women and at exchanging and sharing experiences on how to achieve SDG No. 5. The Conference, held at the Seri Pacific Hotel in Kuala Lumpur had the support of the Islamic Science, Education, Social and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) and the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO and was jointly officiated by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation representing the Ministry’s Hon. Minister and Dr. Gulser Corat, Director, Division of Gender Equality, UNESCO Paris representing H.E. Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO.  A video message from the Director-General on UNESCO during the opening added significance to the event.

 

Training Workshop on Big Data for Developing Countries
15 - 18 May 2017, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The workshop was held from 15-18 May 2017 at Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. A total of 29 participants which consisted delegates from 12 countries comprising Botswana, Indonesia, Oman, Pakistan, Syria, South Africa, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Yemen and Malaysia attended the workshop, 15 were males and 14 were females.

On 3 April 2017, The Hon. Datuk Seri Panglima Madius Tangau and Academician Dato’ Ir. (Dr.) Lee Yee Cheong, ISTIC Honorary Chairman attended the Global Science Advisory Council (GSIAC) 2017 Meeting in New Delhi which was chaired by the Prime Minister. Both are members of this Council.

(Dr.) Lee Yee Cheong, ISTIC Honorary Chairman accompanied MOSTI Minister, the Honorable Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau on a working visit to the Centre for Science and Technology of the Non-Aligned Movement and other Developing Countries (NAM S & T Centre)  in New Delhi. The Minister was a member of the Malaysian delegation which was on official visit to India led by  the Malaysian Prime Minister.

Dato’ Dr. Sharifah Maimunah Syed Zin, Director of ISTIC was invited to speak at the above conference which was organised under the auspices of the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT) and the Egyptian Young Academy for Sciences (EYAS). The conference was officiated by Dr. Mahmoud Sakr, President of ASRT. Other persons who spoke during the opening were Prof. Dr. Amal Amin of the National Research Center, Advisory Board Member of EYAS and Chair of WISWB Organising Committee, Prof. Dr. Nadia I. Zakhary, former Minister of Scientific Research Egypt, and representative of L’Oreal Egypt.

Training Workshop on Inquiry-Based Science Education (IBSE) for Science Teachers
5-9 February 2017, Khartoum, Sudan

The International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation under the auspices of UNESCO (ISTIC) was invited to conduct the above workshop by the Inter-Academy Partnership Science Education Programme (IAP SEP) as part of the major event under comprising a Science Education Policy Forum and the Annual Meeting of the IAP SEP Global Council. The workshop was officiated by H.E. Souad Abdel Razek, the Federal Minister of Education. Two facilitators from Ministry of Education Malaysia i.e. Dr. Koay Suan See and Mr. Abdul Muhaimin Osman conducted the training. Thirty five participants, comprising science educators from Sudan and Egypt attended the workshop. Of these, ten came from schools in the Kenana Sugar Company in Sudan, and one from an international school. The rest were from government schools. Participants from Egypt were from the Ministry of Education.

ISTIC coordinated a public lecture by Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women in collaboration with the Ministry of Women, Familyand Community Development on 28 November 2016. Dr. Mlambo-Ngcuka spoke on the topic “Can the SDGs Deliver on their promise of Gender Quality and Empowerment of Women by 2030?Exploring strategies and imperatives for making the dream a substantive reality”. The public lecture was officiated by the Hon. Dato' Sri Rohani Abdul Karim, the Minister for Women, Family and Community Development.

 

2016 KISTEP-ISTIC S&T Innovation Training Program for High-Level Policy Makers

The 2016 KISTEP-ISTIC S&T Innovation Training Program for High Level Policy Makers was successful held at Corus Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 26-30 September 2016. This is the 8th training program organized by ISTIC and Korea Institute of S&T Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP).This training program was participated by 20 participants from 16 developing countries comprising Cambodia, Colombia, Indonesia, Egypt, Gambia, Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Samoa, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda and Uzbekistan.

From 19-23 September 2016, 41 selected participants from developing countries comprising 8 international participants from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Kenya, Kiribati, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uganda and 33 participants from Malaysia participated in the above workshop. This workshop held at the Quality Hotel City Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was a follow up of the first training workshop in 2015 that was held in Kuala Lumpur which was supported by the Malaysian Institute of Teacher Education (IPGM). This is the 13th training programme on IBSE organised by ISTIC in collaboration with LAMAP Foundation, France.

Training Workshop on Technopreneurship for Women in Science, Technology and Innovation

The above workshop was organised in collaboration with the NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women (NIEW) with the support of the Islamic Scientific, Educational and Cultural Organization (ISESCO). The workshop was designed to train participants on the elements of technology-based entrepreneurship. 32 delegates from 15 countries comprising scientists and researchers from research centres and universities participated. 15 were from Malaysia. Other countries represented were Algeria, Cambodia, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Swaziland Tunisia and Tanzania.

IAP General Assembly in session

Chair of ISTIC Governing Board, Dato Ir. (Dr.) Lee Yee Cheong attended the triennial InterAcademy Panel (IAP) General Assembly on 2 March 2016 in Hermanus, South Africa and presented his report on the IAP Science Education Program (SEP). Dato Lee is the Chair of IAP SEP Global Council. He highlighted IAP SEP's 2016 initiatives together with ISTIC:

  1. One Day Event in UNESCO Paris on IBSE 5 April 2016.
  2. Four IBSE Workshops in ECO countries namely Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan and Pakistan‎. 
  3. Students as Agents of Change against Spread of Mosquitoes in Latin America.
  4. Three Programs in China under the "One Belt One Road" Initiatives.
  5. Activate the Education and Capacity Building provisions of the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement‎ (TPPA).
